Got a couple cymbals today, need help ID'ing one.. Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I was at GC tonight "perusing" the used cymbals and ended up taking home a cool-sounding 17" K Custom Fast Crash and a 16" A-series "Medium Thin Crash".

This is the cymbal:

Now, I guess it looks like a medium thin crash, but looking at just the stamp, or what can be made out of it, how was someone at Guitar Center able to positively identify this cymbal? I can say based on my own research and matching it up that it might be 70's vintage, thin stamp... but I'm not an expert on cymbals at all. It sounded cool and different and was cheap so I bought it.. Just kind of curious how old it actually is..

Guitar Center are positive about plenty of things which are completely incorrect when it comes to cymbals. That's why people who know what they are looking at can sometimes get good deals there.

In this case however, that weight does fit with it being a 16" crash. I can't say whether THIN or MEDIUM THIN would be more likely.

And yes that stamp is the 1970s one, sometimes called the thin stamp. I'm still behind on getting the rest of my price and weights analysis in place, but you can see the expected price range for 16": http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-prices.html#16

And the ways to id the stamp (although I've found a few more since then but haven't updated the site) are found here: http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#70s

Cool, that's good info. I did research the stamp and it definitely looked like the 70's thin stamp, and I compared it to one of my more modern crashes, which clearly has a bold laser-engraved stamp.

Yeah, I only paid $90 for it. Whether or not it was a good deal, who knows, but it sounds decent enough!
