G.started painting their drums in 1954,AFAIK........

3 THICK plies with paint to me are from around 1956-58.......

Ohhhh, that snare drum is yummy.

Here's one that sold on ebay a couple days ago at $725. It is 6 ply and has been refinished.

Your 3 ply shell and finish are more desirable in my opinion and would likely fetch a higher price. Thanks for sharing.

and what was/is the purpose for the paint? Is it just something Gretsch started and is now known for?

It's called silver sealer and is a Gretsch-thing. They still apply it on drums to this day.
