I have seen a few pictures of 18x16 Gretsch USA Custom Square Badge bass drums and am wondering when Gretsch started making them. Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Very early 80's they introduced the "Power Jazzette" set: 16x18 BD, 10x12 TT, 14x14 FT.

Thanks for the insight Orangemi. I am picking up a kit this weekend in these sizes: 18x16, 12x8, 13x9, 16x16.
Thank you.
I sure will Larryz. I was hoping it would have had a 14" floor tom, but I will take them as-is for now.
[QUOTE=orangemi;325223]Very early 80's they introduced the "Power Jazzette" set: 16x18 BD, 10x12 TT, 14x14 FT.
Set also included an 8x14 snare...
Interesting about the snare size.
So the '57 Renown series released a few years ago was really more like a continuation of the Power Jazzette series only they had the funky Chevrons and linked them to the old cars of the 50's then. But, the sizes were the same.
I picked up the drums yesterday and basically bought 2 kits worth of drums. Here is what I ended up getting from the original owner. He had ordered it with Yamaha YESS hardware.
Kit #1:
Gretsch USA Custom Walnut finish kit from 1983 or 1984.
Sizes:
Bass: 18x16
Toms: 12, 13, 16. The 16" came with blonde bass hoops and some gold claws as it had also been loaned to the owners cousin for him to use as a bass drum.
Kit #2
18x16 Gretsch USA Custom bass in Walnut finish that is slightly newer than the 1st 18x16 bass drum
Yamaha Recording Customs in Cherrywood finish - 10, 12, 14 (with legs)
They are pretty dirty and I need to clean them up. I will post pictures once I have that all done. I would like to remove the hardware and run it through my vibratory tumbler, but that will have to wait for while. So for now I will just Windex the chrome and use some Trick polish on the shells.
They sound fantastic.
Here is a picture of the Gretsch USA drums I picked up a couple months ago.
There are TWO 18x16 bass drums, the rack toms are 12" and 13" with a 16" floor tom. The drum on the far right with the natural hoops is actually the 16" floor tom that has since been converted back to a floor tom with die cast hoops.
The original owner ordered the drums with Yamaha mounts in 1983 or 1984, which seems to be what others did in that era from what I understand. He ordered the 2nd bass shortly after getting the kit. Note the placement of the tom mount on the bass drums.
I would love to add a 14" floor tom (or 14" rack tom) is anyone has one.
Thanks!
