Gretsch Bop Kick vs. All the Rest? Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Interestingly enough, looks like the 18" that began this thread is again available, on the Buffalo NY craigslist listed for $2400. Possibly a scam?

I don't have anything to add re the history and desirability of the Gretsch 18" bass drum (it's been said well). However, I can comment on the sound compared to a Rogers Cleveland 18" kit....

I have a very early 70's SSB Gretsch 18,12,14 kit in black nitron. Same shells as 60's era kits. It sounds good. I have enjoyed playing it. However, IMHO, the Gretsch 18" bass drum pales in comparison to my Rogers 18" bass drum. The Rogers ain't exactly cheap, but not priced in the stratosphere as the Gretsch. After playing the Rogers kit, the Gretsch kit went into storage. Just no contest (for me)..

IMHO, felt dampened heads renders your comparison worthless.

The way they were set up in the photos is not necessarily where they ended up when I played them. Just experimenting with different configurations. I ended up with a very light felt on the batter for a touch of control and nothing on the resonant head for both.

From Dan Boucher

I sold a 20,12,14 fanatic a 20,12,16 in the late 90's with 10 minutes of tuning to his ear. His kit had been stolen and was convinced he had to have a 14 to replace his original. Not so once he heard a 16 properly tuned.

Any recordings of this set? How'd you have it set up? I've got a set of Dayton Rogers 12/16/20 that I'm trying to get dialed in for jazz gigs. The 16"s the only question, the rest are std issue "jazz" sizes. I figure Joe Morello sounded great with 13/16/22......BTW, this was a surf gig, ie hole in kick, muffled floor tom, etc.

Powertone-

I most agree- my same Rogers Bop kit as yours sounds AMAZING- it sings like no other. IMHO- Rogers was built and sounds better then a Gretsch. Rogers made Quality drums/hardware and drum oriented instruments. & Gretsch on the other hand were all over the map.

Just an opinion- not intended to offend you Gretsch lovers.
