I posted a few days ago about this student kit I bought on eBay for $135 including shipping. It came with a sturdy cardboard case, stand, sticks and a drum key. I took off the rims and clips that came with and put on a pair of die casts and it sounds pretty cool.

Anyone know what that "683" signifies stamped on the shell under the butt plate?

Anyone know what that "683" signifies stamped on the shell under the butt plate?

My guess would be an inventory number for a school district or other such entity. Not something Gretsch would have done at the factory.

I have recorded a few drums with similar markings. I do not have an explanation for them, but here are two others with numbers 581 below the butt and 708 above the butt.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72
