Gretsch Floor Tom/BD project Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I just wanted to share my excitement with my first Gretsch floor tom/bass drum conversion project. I found a very nice 18x18 SSB floor tom that matches my Progressive Jazz kit and wanted a less expensive option for a 14x18 bass drum. I sent the drum straight to Precision Drum Company and they helped me with cutting the shell, redrilling for lugs, recutting one bearing edge, drilling for vintage spurs and using leftover wrap for bass drum inlays. They even moved one of the mufflers to the traditional Pratt position. Here's a before picture...I will try to upload the after picture next (only seem to be able to do one photo at a time).

Suffice to say I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and want to give a big thanks to George at Precision Drum Co. I know it's a sacrilege to alter such a nice original drum, but the bottom line is it will now be used a LOT more (it was clearly just collecting dust) and treasured in my personal collection. This is now my "go to" bass drum for all my jazz gigs and a much cheaper way to enter into the realm of vintage Gretsch bopland!

Man I dig it I think it turned out well. Throw a 60's rail on it which happened in the SSB era so is ok!

Great job! Those 18x18 floor toms have little or no value.

Never play it the same way once.

Thanks guys! It was listed as a 16x18, but turned out to be an 18x18, so it was perfect for cutting down to a 14x18 and gave me plenty of wrap for the inlays. There are only two extra holes remaining (the spur holes were cut right out of pre-existing top holes of the FT leg brackets), but you can't even see them unless you look under the drum. The tom mufflers are actually, IMO, even better for this size drum than the Pratt, so it's actually quite nice sounding and very functional as a bass drum. Couldn't be happier!

Great move, beautiful results. Agree a rail mount would be sweet.
