Gretsch snare date Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Hi, I just ordered a round badge 5.5 gretsch snare. Advertised as 1960s. There were not many pictures of the snare but heres what I saw. The snare had die cast hoops, the 60s looking kind, no snap in key holder was ever there, it has a single point butt plate. No pictures of the inside, but I talked to the guy briefly on the phone. I ask if there was a tag with serial numbers, he said there was no tag, nor was there a mark where a tag had once been. I should have ask if there was a silver interior, and how many ply it was but didnt. I wanted this snare to match a kit I have, and thought it was a very fair price. Ive been looking for a Gretsch snare in midnight blue pearl for around a year now, 3 ply 6ply didnt matter as long as it had the Microsensitve throw off, which it did so I got it. Im thinking this snare maybe late 50s and was trying to get a second opinion. If it were late 50s, and in the transition period, would it be 3 or 6 ply? Thanks, Ill find out in a week, but until then was seeing what anybody else thinks. Thanks again

Kieth that time frame It could be either a 3 or 6 ply shell. You didn't say if it was a 6 or 8 lug model it could be a few different models that donot have the cyclops key holder on them. here look at these two scans. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/gretsch_snare_drums/1961_gretsch_snare_drums2.jpg. and http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/gretsch_snare_drums/1954_gretsch_snare_drums2.jpg

Ok, I got the snare. Here is what I got. A nameband 5.5 x 14. 3ply, pretty thin, thinner than my 3ply toms and bass. Clear interior with no stamp or tag. No snap in key holder, single node butt plate. The microsensitive has a spring exposed, my 60s micros have a metal tube where this spring is, die cast hoops. The hoops are identical to all my 60s die cast hoops. Can anybody tell me what year this would be, give or take? I do not have a camera or know how to go about with getting a picture up. So going on the info stated above, can anybody give me a rough estimate of the year? Im thinkig mid 50s? Thanks, any info would be greatly appreciated.

It may be a 55, 56 maybe 57 Broadkaster (this snare was included in the Nameband kit). I have some 53's with inkstamps and have heard of 54. I have some 58 3ply drums with Silver Sealer.....there may be some 57 or earlier with Sealer but I've not seen them. That is how I came up with 55 to maybe 57 for your drum....just a guess from what I've read.

Yup. Mid to late fifties. I would bet '56 or later.

As I always say....

Never seen a natural interior with a date stamp inside past 1953.......and have never seen a silver sealer drum with a date inside.....

So,draw your own conclusion........

Great, thanks everybody that really helps. Do you guys think the die cast are original to the drum? The 3 ply kit im putting it with has silver sealer, but stick chopper hoops. Id say the kit was late 50s. Did snares ever come with stick choppers? it seems like a kit with stick choppers always has a snare with die cast? When was die cast introduced? Thanks

Also, is there ever a 6 ply with clear interiors? Besides the few in the late 60s that came with clear interiors. Has anybody ever saw a 50s 6ply that was clear on the inside?
