Has anyone seen a mixture of glossy and flat finishes on a Maple Gretsch kit before? I was under the impression that natural maple was only offered with a glossy finish. I am also interested in knowing if the ball mount on the rack tom and the mufflers on the bass drum are original.
I assumed the kit was pieced together or refinished, but after looking over the interiors of the drums I am not so sure. The grommets seem to be original as well as the paper tags showing the following model and serial numbers:
12"- Model 4415W, Serial 55888
14"- Model 4417W, Serial 55762
18"- Model 4244W, Serial 54623
-The bass drum has holes and screws for a Jimmy Pratt muffler on the bottom of the shell, but there are two tom style Gretsch mufflers installed for each head. One of the mufflers seems to have an empty hole under the knob. This leads me to believe that these were added to the drum, one of which was placed in the same spot the adjustment knob for the Pratt muffler would have gone. Not sure, just a guess.
-The bass drum has a rail consolette, while the rack tom has a ball style mount. The hole for the ball mount seems to be a bit sloppy, but I have seen this before on SSB Gretsch drums. It seems like the ball mount was added to the tom considering the consolette on the bass drum.
-The previous owner did not use the rail consolette and had taken it off the drum explaining the non original bolts and lack of washers.
I have uploaded a bunch of photos which can be seen at the following link (there are 3 pages of photos once you follow link):
