I am looking into a 70's to early 80's Gretsch kit with a ball and socket type tom mount and am wondering if any of you have had any experience with this type of mount. Seems to be a bit cumbersome and poorly engineered and could be a deal breaker. Any advice? Thanks.

I've never had a problem with mine (hex & ball). I've had mine since '78. Only recently switched to RIMS, for lower setup.
