Guess I've joined the Rogers club... Last viewed: 42 minutes ago

Hello folks! A local drummer, a fine fellow by the way, and I 'kind of' put the deal together a few days before Thanksgiving. We were both busy though, so held off about a week and a half until time wasn't such an issue.

Long story short, I picked up a sweet, extremely clean and well maintained Rogers kit. It does seem to be missing the 12" rack tom, however, all I play anymore is bass (20 or 22) rack (13 prefered, 12 if it's what I've got) and a 16 floor... with various snares. This is exactly that: 22, 13, 16.

Okay Rogers folks, here's what I think I've found out:

It is a Fullerton kit late '72 or early '73. The rack toms label is there, but is badly faded. The floor tom has a small label; serial # B 14036 (also marked 9/72). On a super fast look, it seems to be three ply with re-rings.

This isn't my favorite finish, but holy tone batman... these are incredible. As easy to tune as Camcos, and sound as good. Really! I'm VERY impressed. The deal also included the correct logo on another bass drum head. It's not original either.

Here's a pic, not mine, the seller sent it to me at the beginning of our communications. It's been raining (YES) here in central California, so my normal pool pics will have to wait.

Further information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like KOA to me. Nice kit, I have one in that finish.

Check Jammin' Jersey's website and you may find the 12 tom if you want it. The good news on that era of Rogers is that the current price point is generally favorable. See a recent eBay add for a set that has 12,13,14,16,18 toms and a 22 bass for $850 and was last at $350 on its auction.

If your set has good bearing edges (and that does crop up to be a problem more often in that era than in the Cleveland/Dayton era) you have a nice set of drums. Rogers had lightened up the tension casing quite and bit, and took out that felt that seemed to retain moisture and lead to more corrosion. Even though lighter, they usually have been found to be plenty strong enough. Someone else may be better versed in the dating of the change-over from 5-ply to 3-ply shells. You may also find it better to invest in some machined collets for the Swivomatic hardware. The cast ones from that era tend to crack and then they won't tighten down properly.

Enjoy the tone!

Craig, very nice kit. It reminded me of DanC kit. I really do think that my Rogers kit is the best sounding of all mine, and it is just an XP8 (Big R) with the KOA veneer. That kit has been set up since I did the veneer on them, never taken down, so ya, they are incredible drums. Now you know why Ploughman has so many Rogers drums.

Yours are really sweet, happy to hear you scored them buddy!

Thank you!

BBK: Yep, it's KOA.

Dan: Thanks for the input. I doubt I'll go looking for the 12, unless it falls in my lap. I also doubt I'll actually use the tom mount. I've always been a 'hang 'em off a stand' kind of guy. The edges are the very first thing I look at - before I purchase. I drove folks nuts about the couple of kits I've bought online.

Jeff! How've you been? We're great! I really was impressed with these, and they still have not really been set up more than a half hour! lol. Yak soon...

Koa's or butcher blocks are a cheaper way to get some superb vintage sounding Rogers. Congrats. 22/16/13 setup is my favorite.

Not surprised they sound amazing. I hope to join the Rogers club someday too...because I'm pretty sure they're simply the best.

Nice kit!

You might want to list it in the "for sale" section. This thread is about a guy who's excited about his new drums.

Nice drums Fishwaltz. Welcome to the club.
