Guitar Vent Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Ok, breath in slowly....ahh, that's better! I'm sorry, but I hope you guys don't mind me venting just a little bit on guitar players. We recently acquired a new guitarist, well, actually we have rehearsed and played with him several times now, but he hasn't learned all our music. Tonight we had a short rehearsal and he was just learning a blues song called, "Wild Woman Never Get the Blues". Before playing the song I told him there was a part in the song that had a "feel" to it, where the riff would start at a low volume and slowly increase. Well, that set him off, "Don't tell me how to play guitar!" "I'm 59 years old and have been playing for 30 years!" "I know what I'm doing, I don't need your help!" I can only guess it was because I'm just a guy who hits things, what do I know about music. I've run into guitarist with this mind set for years, they really need to grow up.

Late bloomer I guess, learning guitar at 29. If it were me, I'd let it slide and see how it goes, if he get's it eventually. Never encountered problems like this with any guitar player. Most of the gig is liking the guys or gals you're playing with

His reaction strikes me as almost comically absurd. Not funny when it's happening though - sorry you had to experience that [again].

Does he address other band members like that? Doesn't seem like it can last...

I thought this thread was going to be about a small hole in a guitar, ha ha!

Too bad for him, he needs to relax and have fun.

Thank you!

I've had similar experiences in my56 years of playing drums. It is the behavior of someone with very low self esteem. You need to calmly let him know you won't tolerate that type of behavior otherwise it will continue. Sooner the better even if it means changing bands.

Question......where are you finding these people? Is the lack of professionals in your area push you into having a musician of this caliber/attitude sit in/join? I guess I live in a different world as word of mouth within the gigging community is worth a lot. I recall speaking with a few musicans in my area about one particular guitarist and the outcome wasn't pretty. Was a fantastic player, but attitude and the way you carry yourself shines throughout the night. I spoke with the other band members about the situation, had a vote and didn't hire him. Got a decent guy to fill in, and the night was fantastic. If you all have a good time, the crowd will see it. My two cents

No reason to take that kind of attitude, especially from a newbie in the group. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. You should be able to find another one easily.

I'd cut a bass player a bit more slack, especially if he's good.

guitar players are like dogs.

One can be controlled, but get a group of em on stage together and it's just pandemonium.
