Ok, my birthday isn't until next week, but a friend of mine gave me this drum today. He knows that I am interested in old drums and he had this one just laying around collecting dust. He told me he bought it new some time in the early 80s, played it for a couple of years but found the drum much too loud for his taste. The drum is not in a very good shape.-A few dents, crome is peeling on one of the rims, both rims are warped and the drum isn't really round. However, I am sure that with some effort I can bring this beauty back to life again :)

Happy Birthday and congrats on your present.
You could always find a replacement hoop from someone on VDF.
The rest of the drum looks great. It just needs some cleaning, new heads and wires. That tape residue should come off pretty easily.
Please post some after pictures when you're done.

Very nice gift and Happy Birthday a bit early. I need some friends like that. Mine just ask to borrow tools and money. x-mas3
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

First of all, Happy Birthday!
Second of all...........TOTAL IRONY!!!
My friend (and bass player) told me he had a Grestch snare in his attic that somone had left behind, and I asked if I wanted it. Of course I said yes (would anyone ever turn down free drum gear?!?!).
I turned out to be this EXACT model drum. That is so cool! I liked it, but was not a big fan of the diecast hoops. I ended up selling it on ebay (I regret doing that....I would like to have it back now). Ironically enough, the guy I sold it to on ebay happened to be Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot fame.
I know, I know...........
Cool1 Story, Bro!
Happy birthday!
And you have a nice friend!
Happy Birthday! Wow, what a friend! Looks like the drum needs some TLC... and a new batter hoop. That 10-lug batter hoop might be a bit pricey, but well worth it. Please post more pictures when complete!
Wow, thank you for your gratulations. I didn't start this thread just to tell you about my birthday, but now that you all know, -keep those presents coming :p
I just started to clean this drum up today and I think all that grime and filth will come off pretty easy. There are a few issues with the drum however. The rims are warped, the drum is out of round and all the lugs seems to be loose. I bet someone has hit this drum with something else besides drumsticks. -I will take pictures and update you all with my progress as I go along.

Just so you know that it may be able to be done -
I used to have a mid60s Slingerland COB that was out of round. I went and bought a couple of threaded rods from the local hardware store along with some washers and nuts. I used them to put the shell back into round. It took a couple tries and eventually I had both rods going at the same time. You have to look very closely and chose the right holes and then also observe what happens with the dimensions as a result of the rod use, then compensate for that - try to get both the rods going at the same time to counteract (address) any consequence of the first rod. It eventually turned out pretty much perfect, and I was able to sell the drum for $170.
Ok, backing up a bit - this is what I did in more detail. I found the oblong shape and then ran the rod through the appropriate holes to bring it back to round. Note: At least in my case, I had to go beyond round - causing it to oval in the other direction (so to speak). I just tightened up and left for about 6 hours. I know this is not wood, but I just tried it and it worked. Just be very smart about it and try this and that a couple times and you will be more familiar with what you are dealing with - and you will learn what you need to do. After the first time of tightening to round, I noticed it went right back to the previous shape after I removed the rod. So, I knew I had to go beyond round in order to effect a change of shape.
Another note: This may be obvious, but be sure to use some padding so as to not damage (like scratch or dent) the outside of the shell. I used backing plates (typically used inside a shell behind a mount) and washers and pieces of cloth to pad.
Good luck,
John

John.
-Thanks for taking your time to help out. -Sorry for not replying directly, I somehow missed your post.
I've measured the drum and the diffrence between the longest to the shortest diameter is about 20mm (4/5"). The top rim is even worse. The bottom rim is close to round but, when put on a flat surface, there is almost a 10mm gap on one side.
I'm not to worried about the shell, I'm sure I can fix that, even if I plan to do it in a different way than you suggest. -I will place the drum flat on a table between to concrete walls and apply pressure from the side(the walls) by using a car jack. Of course I will put padded pices of wood on both sides of the drum to avoid any scratching or marking. I am however a bit concerned about the rims. They are made of cast metal and I'm afraid that they might snap if I force them to much.
I will come back with the result and a few pictures once I'm finished.
