I am curious to hear about people's experiences taking off chrome plating from brass snare drums.
has anyone stripped chrome from brass? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Just a few questions. What's wrong with the chrome on the drum? is it a vintage snare? maker of snare? If the drum is vintage most collectors like the drum as it is with the chrome showing its age..I have sent out drums out from the shop in the pass to have the chrome removed-{sent it to te guys we used for rechromeing}-.Iam not sure how they did this but the drum came back in nice clean brass..Mikey
You have to take the shell to a local plater. I had a 100 year-old COB shell that had chemically damaged chrome on it. The plater stripped the chrome and polished the brass for me. The shell came out spectacular. Looking like brand new. I like the polished brass much more than shiny chrome.
See before and after photos.

I inquired at my local plater a while back. He did say it was a bit tricky because the brass under the chrome could be damaged too. He recommended to me that he just take the chrome off the nickle (which would have been between the brass and chrome) and have me lightly sand the remaining nickle off the brass and then polish. Haven't done it yet so I don't know if that's the process or not.
Pics?
2x's - I paid $150.00 to have two shells stripped of their chrome and polished; the brass one in the photo and a badly pitted supra shell. I had them strip the chrome off the supra and polish the bare aluminum. It shined better than chrome and will never pit again. Not a bad deal to get two killer drums out the other end of the process.
Do comparison shopping for a plater. Their prices for the same job are all over the map. Find your best price and do it. It's well worth it.
(see photo of the stripped/polished supra.)
Freak - I never heard of a plater handing you back the drum and asking you to sand off the nickel. I handed my guy two shells and some cash, he handed me back two -stripped and polished- shells.

Learning about all these different types of Supra's is fun. I posted in general
questions about my pitted Seventies Supra, minus B/O badge.
What kind of Supra is in your photo, year etc?
Thank you.
The Ludwig is a 1966 supra that I customized with chrome over brass tube lugs. I wanted to open up the sound of the drum. The brass snare is 1910 Oliver Ditson drum. I included a photo of the finished antique brass snare drum. I used Ego center-point-mount lugs and chrome over brass single-flange hoops and clips.

Wish I had your smarts!!
Adrian.
