Head choice for Ludwig NOB Universal? Last viewed: 15 hours ago

I have a 14"x4" Ludwig universal snare drum.

I have a set of Grover Pro percussion wires to go on the drum.

I was wondering what heads you guys might think would suit this drum the best.

Aquarian heads dont fit into the flangeless hoops properly although they fit fine on the drum.

Evans heads fit the best on this drum, no issues at all there.

I figure i should probably just go for something like the G1.

Should I be getting the 200 snare side or the standard 300?

I had a look at a bunch of remo ambassadors today, I looked through 5 or 6 of them, but they all seemed to have a very inconsistent coating applied. Some of them had areas where there was clearly much more light penetrating to the other side. I have also seen some heads that have a super thick coating, almost like the aquarian stuff.

So i guess I should go with Evans in this time. Any batter head you could reccomend?

With the new Evans 360 heads you can't go wrong..They're perfectly suited to fit, (as Evans claims) ANY vintage or modern drum.. I tried an EQ4 for the first time on both sides of my Ludwig kick and immediately got the sound i was looking for without having to tweak it too much, unlike the P3 i had on it before..The P3 took long to get settled onto the bearing edge, and tuning drove me crazy..I think i may slowly make the transition into Evans simply because they bring more out of each drum.

However, the one drum head i will never switch is my snare batter, and for that, i use CS Coated black dot.. For me personally, it's the best coated snare drum head.. Let us know how they sound with Evans heads..

I have an Aquarian American Vintage on my Ludwig. Seems to work fine with the straight non-flange hoop and sounds great too.

...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.

Well, I've gotten the heads and snare wires, and I got everything on the drum today, so I'll post a few pictures. The Grover Snare wires are causing me some major issues, they are not possible to tension evenly. I will probably resort to getting different wires, but I was really looking forward to having these wires on this snare drum. Oh well.

I ended up getting an Evans G1 with a Snare side 300. Pretty much standard.
