Head selection for 18 inch kick Last viewed: 57 minutes ago

I have a great new (old) set that forum member billnvick put together for me - there are a couple of threads about it.

As it was going to go into my very small studio, we settled on an 18 inch kick - I have a 22 on another set in a bigger space, but I'm here about half the time, so I thought it might be interesting to try the little guy.

My question is - what's a good place to start for a batter head for this drum? Despite the size, it's not really for jazz, mostly for recording in pretty sparse acoustic guitar-ish rock, for lack of a better description. So, as much low end as I can get, recognizing the limitations of the drum and that a lot depends on tuning.

I'm also in the UK, if that makes any difference for peoples' recommendations. The variety of Evans heads alone is bewildering to this novice drummer. Help!

If you're interested, I have quite a few NOS 18 heads made for marching bass drums that work great on kits. I have one on my Rogers 18 bass drum and it's killer.

PM if you're interested.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I used a black, Ludwig Logo head on the reso (Came with the drum) and an EMAD2 with the narrowest foam ring. Both heads were tuned just a little higher than taught. It sounded good and felt good, rebound-wise. I was going for a controlled sound with little overtone. The BD was a Ludwig, New Classic.

Good luck.
