Head selection on WFL Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Loading...

I have a WFL kit in WMP wrap and I plan to play it out more this year. I would like to change out the calfskin head that is on the reso side of the bass drum with a head that I can cut a port hole in for mic'ing for live situations.

Any suggestions on resonant BD heads? I'd like to keep it vintage looking so I'm thinking either an Aquarian Vintage or Remo Fiberskyn.. what do yall think?

I'd go with the Fiberskyn if it were mine.

Thanks Mike. I was kinda of torn between which one to go with and I know for certain that I'm not cutting a hole in that calf head.

Maybe keep the port as small as possible...cut a donut out of a used head and contact cement it on there to prevent tearing. Looks cool too. :)

You can age coated BD reso heads nicely with tea and/or coffee, brew it real dark, let it cool and pour/wipe on. I've done it, kept it basic, tinting the head evenly, but with some texture-less cotton or linen rags you could do a pretty good fake calf-head I'll bet...something to fool with while you wait for the Fiberskyn, maybe.

I like your idea about using a donut cut out of an old head as a reinforcement ring around the port! Makes sense. I recently purchased an aquarian reso head for my Club Date kit- an Aquarian Force II- and it came with a precut "donut" ring to assist in hole placement. I may try that aging process using an old head as well.

Cool! So the idea with the rags is soak em in the tea/coffee, place as randomly as possible on the head, and let em dry - they should leave patterns pretty close to the texture of calfskin.......I think. :)

Here's a pic of a head that was on a drum in a dumpster lol - it had paper glued to it, which I pulled off and then attacked some of the residue with acetone, being careful not to remove the coating. I love how ratty it looks, just wish I'd cut the port a little smaller. It's got the homemade donut on there too...

How did you get the home made donuts cut so cleanly? exacto knife?
