Need a little help here, before I go speding $. What top and bottom heads would you recommend for a vintage sound, but that will also project (unmiked), when tuned up high?

I'd recommend coated Remo Ambassadors on batter side. Coated, clear, or even smooth white Ambassadors on resonant side.
Aquarian, Ludwig and Evans, among others offer similar medium weight heads.

Ludwig coated weather master heads both top and bottom. You can't go wrong with either medium or heavy, depending on how you play. They are the most responsive heads I've played on my old 3 ply kits. I'll be posting a for sale thread soon for all my "other" branded heads (Evans, Aquarian, REMO), as they are on the way out. They are stiff and muting compared to the Ludwig WM heads.
