Hello, and of course, questions... Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hello- happy to have found this forum. I'm sure, like most topics/products nowadays, there are multiple forums for vintage drums, but I liked the sound/look of this one.

I have been drumming my entire life- well, since age 5 anyway- have played many brands yada yada.... My first kit was a late 60's SBP Ludwig- unfortunately no longer in my possession. I do have the 14x5 Supra that came with that kit when my father bought it used in '75.

In the late 90s, I acquired a 4pc (kick, 2 racks, floor) WMP Slingerland kit from a local mom & pop music store for a steal. Wasn't even looking to buy anything, but spotted them and decided to snag them. From the research I've done on the serials and badges (I know, a challenge with the Slingys), it seems that the kick, floor, and one of the racks were manufactured together between '70-'72, and the other rack in '73-'75. Both racks are 13s, and while I know it wasn't completely out of the question for some drummers to have matching size rack toms, I always found it odd and don't think it to be the norm. My theory is that the orig kit had a 12 rack that was lost/destroyed, and someone, at some point, added another 13. Either way, wrap and lugs all match, so the add on tom had to have been manufactured within a handful of years from the orig kit. The only way I was able to determine for sure that the one rack is from '73 or later, is because the badge on that one is the gloss black silk screened "football" shaped badge, ever so slightly different than the straight oval etched badges from 72 and prior.

I am looking to sell this kit. Wrap is in decent shape- yellowed a good bit which is expected. As stated above, all lugs match and are in good shape. S hoops on all toms, also in good cond. Chrome can def use some cleaning/polishing. Kick has had one of the hoops replaced with just a standard maple hoop- was like this when I purchased them. Has all 3 orig floor tom legs, and the dbl tom mount for the kick.

So, the million dollar question- what would these bring in the current market? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The million dollar answer is post some photos and the experts will chime in :) And welcome. Hope you hang around here a bit. WMPs vary in the degree of yellowing. A more uniform yellowing is better than some yellower than others. And I don't think the two 13" toms was a mistake. Some kits were sold like that, oddly enough. I'm thinking not more than $800. Maybe a bit more or less. Slingys don't command the $$ that Ludwigs do. plus rather soft market these days as well.

Thanks Larry.

Yeah, I'll be hanging around a bit. The more I think about it, the more I think I might like to gradually restore these and keep 'em. I know that a lot of vintage junkies like the yellowing, but I'm not a fan of it. I know there are some methods used by resto experts to clean/refinish the surface and at least level out or reduce some of the yellowing, so I may look into that- or just re-wrap them.

You're not kidding when you say it's a soft market- and I live in VA Beach, which if you're not familiar with Southeastern VA, is about as soft as it gets. Selling music equip around here is brutal.
