Help Identification of older marching snare - Slingerland? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I am out of my area of expertise with this particular project.

I am needing some assistance with identifying this drum. Unfortunately the attached pictures are all I have to work with at the moment.

To me the most interesting feature is the use of L-angle pieces mounted directly to the wood hoops for tensioning the heads. The tube rods offer single tension, which was also not particularly common in early marching drums. There are also many more than the typical eight tension rods per side. I keep counting 15, but hope that I am just not seeing the 16th.

The only drum I can find that had more than eight tension rods per side (it has ten) and used the L-angle piece in lieu of clips or claws is a 1930s Slingerland Artists' wood hoop snare that Mark Cooper has shown on his website. I include the picture of an advertisement which is found at http://www.coopersvintagedrums.com/newslinghistory.htm (about 20% down the page).

There seems to be some interesting artwork near the vent hole, but I cannot get a straight-on shot of it.

Any assistance in identifying this drum will be appreciated. I will not see the drum in person for a while and I these are the only pictures available right now (I know that pictures of the throw/strainer and the interior of the shell would help a lot.)

Looks like a Duplex to me. I have a few with the same hardware but smaller depth. I'll have to find a picture to post for you. Your right a picture of the throw will be very telling.

Thanks for the quick response. I have an older Duplex lower level snare but it looks nothing like this marcher.

In the first two pictures is a clue. You can see at the bottom of the picture on the table, the hand key for the throw. You can also see that the throw is at the top, attached to the hoop.

Iv`e seen that here before, both, that key and half and half.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Now that I know that it is a Duplex drum, I found a few drums with some similar characteristics. Thanks again for the ID help.

This drum is at a live auction out of town. Unless someone tells me that it would be worth it to make a drive and then spend most of a day waiting to find out if anyone else is bidding on it, I will likely pass.

I absolutely love the Duplex I have. With a bit of work it cleaned up beautifully into one of the more interesting and beautiful drums in my collection. If its not a long drive, I would say go for it ! Mine is similar if not the same as the first picture you posted of the 3-concert style snares.

Thanks for the guidance. I went to the auction, which was about an hour away. After three hours (and some spending on some other items that I did not really need) they got to the drum. I has the high bidder. I will post pictures later, but it is a 9" depth, 17" diameter 15 lug Duplex drum. Those are some pretty strange characteristics for someone who normally deals with drums from the 1960s. The drum is missing two tension rods and the badge. Some nice inlay around the vent hole and some damage to the outer ply in one spot. I am pretty happy.

Attached is one more picture that the auction company put on its facebook page before the auction.
