Help identify this drum please Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi,

I recently acquired this 10-lug snare drum, that was reported as being a Leedy.

Though it has an early "Presto Strainer," closer inspection reveals a few inconsistensies.

-The first is the bearing edge consists of a fairly tight rounded edge (3/16 inch across), almost closing on the inside of the shell.

Leedy shells that I am familiar with, have a much wider flanged, angled edge (maybe 1/2 inch), followed by two more edge bends stiffening the shell.

-The next is that the shell is a one-piece, single bead design.

-Third, this is a 10-tube-lug shell.

- The placement of the Presto strainer makes it difficult to work properly.

-The tubes on the lugs look "improvised" to a degree.

-Lastly, the hoops are thinner and lighter weight than I am used to seeing on a Leedy drum.

-very minimal snare bed.

-modern t-rods fit properly.

Last pic is a 1924 Leedy shell.

Any help identifying this drum is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I noticed some build similarities between mine and a 1915-1920s Duplex NOB.

...pretty sure that it isn't a Leedy.

You might inquire with John Aldridge at Not So Modern Drummer. He was deeply into that era of drum last I knew.

Just got some great info from Mr Aldridge, which narrowed it quite a bit.

Thank you Mr Aldridge.

It appears to be from the Conn era during the early years he took over Leedy and Ludwig.

During those times (1928-1929), some parts were outsourced from other manufacters or used from inventory and made to work, simply to complete a drum.

That said, I have found little catalog info to support the 10-lug model, but will keep looking.

Thank you once again!
