I hope you were the winner (5 mins ago) of the like-colored 12" tom, with the BIN auction on ebay. B

Unfortunately no.

They look like a light Walnut to me, but then again maple or honey maple is not out of the question. Is it possible they were refinished at some point by a previous owner? That could well be you issue. If they are lighter than a cataloged color, that could just be the photo finishing that is making them appear lighter. Have you actually placed them next to a kit you know for certain to be issued as Antique Maple?

Actually the thought of them being refinished crossed my mind a few times, after all the bearing edges were definitely redone. However if they were refinished it was done a long while back as the drums do show typical signs of use up close. Also the refinishing would have had to have been done by someone with expert skills, because there is not one bubble, bump or divot in the clear coat. The only imperfection, if it can be called one is some darkening along the seam of the 13" shell.

I have never put these against another Antique Maple or Walnut finish kit from the same era. I have seen both finishes on more current Gretsch drums and both are darker.

These are definitely close in colour to the 18, 12, 14 kit that Bill had for sale on his site. Kind of a shade of toasty caramel.
