Help Identifying Vintage Slingerland Snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hello,

I recently purchased an old Slingerland Snare Drum from Goodwill of all places. It has a 1928 - 1941 Cloud Badge and a Slingerland Strainer that I cannot identify. It looks like someone took off the sparkle finish and painted it a brown/maroon, but I can still see left over gold sparkle where the strainer is located. It also has wood rims that have been painted gold and one WFL calf skin head that is in rough shape. It has a 14 in. rim and is 10 in. deep and looks like a ply shell. It came with 6 clamshell rods, but I am not sure if this is the original number or if it is missing a few? It is missing a piece next to the strainer, but I am unsure of what this might be, a damper? Any help identifying the drum and also advice on refurbishing would be appreciated. I would like to bring it back to as original, playable condition as possible. I have included some pictures below, thanks in advance for your help.

This seems to be the Slingerland "Legion Heir Parade Drum" of 1941, single tension (pearl finish $10 extra) Did you mean that the gold sparkle was painted over ? It should have 8 rods. The 2 holes near the strainer are for a key holder. Look at the Vintage drum Guide at the top of the Homepage for catalog year 1941.

I have several of these snares , in Mahogany finish . They have a nice American Eagle & Flag decal on the side. If you remove the paint you might find this unique design on one of the panels.

That's a marching snare. I have an extra key holder. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks tdennis and PTMatt!

@tdennis - the gold sparkle was not painted over, just looks like it was removed? I've taken off a sparkle finish before and it reminds me of the residue that a laminate like that leaves behind. I also looked at the catalogs and the weird thing is the Legion Heir Parade Drums look like the lugs are affixed to the shell and mine does not have any holes and the hardware has no mounts? Could it still be a Legion Heir? Also you said you have a few of these drums and is the drum just stained mahogany or is there a mahogany laminate over the shell?

Any other help from other members is much appreciated!

This drum could be bought w/ or w/out center posts. They were 3 ply w/ an outer ply of lacquered Mahogany(my version).
