Help needed with snare identification Last viewed: 19 minutes ago

Loading...

Hi there,

i'm new on the forum and want to introduce myself first.

I'm Roy and i'm from Maastricht, the Netherlands. I used to play drums years ago, but recently started again (standing!!!). I recently purchased a vintage bass and tom, which i use together with a COB Gretsch roundbadge snare.

The bass and tom will be posted here later for identification too. I play rockabilly music. Not in a band yet...first i need some more practicing again...

Now about the snare...

Besides the mentioned Gretsch i have a vintage unknown 13" snare.

There's no brand or any other id on it. Even not on the inside.

It's a pearl white 13" snare with a great sound. It has a silencer and 6 lugs on each side. I googled and it looks like it's an old AJAX, because of the very unusual lugs. But i'm absolutely not sure about that. Please look at the pictures below. I hope that someone can help me with the identification. Does anyone know how old this one might be???

Thanks a lot!

Everything about it except that tone control knob says it`s Sonor !! Very close to a D422 Super Extra !! They were mid fifties and had painted on badges that could be washed off !!

It also has the wrong size heads, they should be floating heads and you can see the extra space inside the rim.

The large washers on the inside of the lug screws is something Sonor would never do !!

We`ll get there !!

It is made in former Eastern German,it is Trowa snare, with many identical parts as Tacton drums, also made in same country.According too some information, here on the forum, that factory was in fact Sonor factory until the end of WWII,and authorities in country continue production under Trowa brand.Drums are ,because of that very similar to Sonor(I mean shape of lugs, parallel snare strainer, etc.)

Thanks a lot for your help so far!!!

Are the floating heads still available? I need them for the bassdrum too, but i have nu idea where to get them.

If you need any more specific pictures...please let me know.

So this snare might be from the 40's or 50's?

Remo will make anything you want,...once a year they`ll take orders but check their web site for time.

I started to lean twords Trixon /Trowa side of Germany too !! The snare is definitly 50`s and German. How`s it sound with those heads ?

I think that you don't need special ordered heads.Normal heads in inches will fit

Look at this link for some whole set of Trowa drums

Thanks a lot!

I googled on Trowa and i really think that this is the brand of the snare, but also of my bassdrum and tom. I think that my set is a bit older than the ones shown from the 60's.

I'll make and post some pics of the whole set tomorrow (it's after midnight here right now).

The sound with these wrong sized heads is amazingly good. I really hope that i don't have Remo to custom make the drumheads for me (as it will cost a lot of $$$ i guess).

I got the snare in a very bad condition. I took it apart and cleaned all the parts as good as i could. It's looking really nice right now. I put these heads on, because the one's on there were broken. I knew that the size was not right, but i had no idea where to get the right ones. The local music-store didnt know too...

The whole set together gives a real nice "old school" sound, which i really like for authentic and neo-rockabilly music.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
