Allright I know I have one picture and a little to go on, but I have a guy interested in selling me this Ludwig. I checked the serial number and its from 1968. I know having a serial on the badge makes it less likely to be COB, but he said the lugs have pitting and the shell doesnt have any pitting at all. Just what he calls a "nice patina".

I know the standard alloy shell would usually pit, and while this wasnt left in a barn to rot its not in "collector cared for" condition. Does the pitting on the alloy lugs but no shell give me hope its a COB? I am going to look at it tomorrow.

Definitely note COB...looks to me like a stripped LM400 (stripped meaning the original chrome plating removed and the bare aluminum/alloy metal exposed). Could be a 10-lug Acrolite but I have my doubts.

Wow people would actually strip chrome from these drums? Thanks for the info.

What tipped it as definitely not COB? The serial number?

the large round knob started in 68. plus, you mentioned that the serial number was 68. ludwig was well into ludalloy shells for several years at this point. it does appear that someone sanded the shell down past the chrome to me.

I agree with it being stripped. Can even polish this shell and will look amazing as well! Nice thing is you can polish out any imperfections (to a certain extent). Had one a few years back that someone sandblasted the snare.....when I say sandblasted, I mean as yours sits now! Didn't even take the thing apart....anyone needing a 10hole COB reso hoop that they want to paint, give me a shout...!LOL

Purdie may chime in on this as he has or had one that he took to a plating shop to have it stripped and polished. The end result was spectacular; probably as good as the original chrome and certainly a more permanent finish. Ludalloy and chrome plating never worked very well together.

Find a chrome shop locally that will do it. If you can't find one (as most of them don't want to fool with it),can always ship it to me, and I can have it done for you. I am in the center of Kansas, and not far.

So true...has a different "shine" also...looks dark and mysterious! Plus...if you ever scratch it, you can buff it outClapping Happy2
