Help with Gretsch SSB kit! Last viewed: 40 minutes ago

Loading...

Hey Gretschperts,

Considering this SSB kit. I can see from the photo that the bottom hoop on the rack tom is not original and the floor tom badge is loose, but I don't see anything else funky except...

What is up with those BD hoops? Could those be original to the kit, or are they an obvious replacement? I've seen Gretsch kits from this era with chrome steel BD hoops and natural-stained wood hoops, but I've never seen something like this.

Any advice? FYI I'm considering trades on my DW Collectors kit (26/14/18), so I'll most likely pass on these unless there's some cash on top... but still tempted as I've always wanted a Gretsch USA kit.

Thanks,

Ken

I'd be tempted. The bass hoops aren't original. Oh well. They're probably better then the chrome originals. Pull that funky inlay off, and do something nicer there. Bottom tom hoop, well, just watch around for one. No big deal. But, I do prefer Gretsch to DW's, usually. The sound works better for me......

Anyone have a spare 6-lug 13" gretsch diecast hoop? What's the going rate on these? $70 on eBay seems a little pricey.

I gotta tell ya,tho. Just came in from a gig with my SSB set, the one up a few posts. Friends who are not musicians and have heard all my sets with all my bands for the last 24 yrs were there tonite, and raved that they were the best sounding kit I've played. They heard them with a different band a couple of weeks ago with the same results. I've had DW, Ayotte, Ludwig, Slingerland, Premier,Rogers {next fav choice}, Yamaha, Pearl, and Radio Kings. Just something about these drums. And they look real nice.....

Crash, Those are particularly sweet looking drums. You really lucked out when you found them.

I have a SSB set in those same sizes in Tangerine Sparkle and it may well be my favorite set (and I have a few). Metal bass hoops and all it just sounds great.

The magic of Craigslist! Saved them from a clown {really a clown} living in a trailer park in Carpenteria. He'd already lost the 13". Calling him, got the message "if you're calling Chuckles the clown {honk-honk}". Knew then it was going to be a scary trip!
