Help with Info on 1920s Ludwig & Ludwig Military Marching Snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi All!

I have what appears to be an early 1920s Ludwig & Ludwig 17 inch diameter x 12 inch tall Military Model Separate Tension Street Marching Snare Drum. Everything appears to be original, and it includes a hard case and sticks. Sticks say "National 3A" on them. Drum is in great shape for as old as it is.

Here's a link to the catalog page - upper left side: http://vintagedrumguide.com/images/other_stuff/bill_ludwigiii/ludwig_1923_8.jpg

My question is, do you guys think I am correct on the date and I am wondering what this may be worth? I don't collect many marching snares, so I would love this to go to the right collector to give it some love in a great home.

Any information anyone could shed on this or if you could recommend who I should speak to on this would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Although the catalogs show that particular model snare drum being available from 1923 to 1929 with that strainer, only the 1929 catalog shows it with a badge mounted above the strainer like yours. That doesn't necessarily mean your snare drum dates precisely to 1929, as the badge could have been mounted on those earlier drums also (catalog pictures weren't update year-to-year if the basic model didn't change).

There is a limited market for vintage parade and marching drums, but it does exist (I own several). I wouldn't hazard a guesstimate on it's value, but I can say that it doesn't come close to the value of the 5x14 or 6.5x14 snares of the same period. Very nice drum though. I love the sound of calfskin heads and gut snares in the morning.

Thanks for the input, Mike! Appreciate it. Anyone else have any idea of value on this one?

Thanks!!!

I purchased a very nice original one that was identical to this. It had the original whitecalf heads, great plating, original key and a bunch of slings (but no case). I paid $250 on ebay for that drum. I would say that figure is a safe maximum. Ones in relic condition usually sell for less than $100, and I have seen functioning ones go for roughly $150. Having the original fibre case is pretty unique, I would say roughly $120-$200. That's my best estimate.
