Help with Slingy Snare Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I've got a 5 1/2 x 14 Slingerland snare in original sparkling gold wrap, with 8 Sound King lugs, COS stick-saver rims, fifth generation rapid strainer, tone control with the post assembly and black & silver Niles badge, SN 254373. Based on the limited research I've done, I've concluded it's a Hollywood Ace from approximately the '75 - '77 time period. Please let me know if I'm mistaken in that regard.

What I'm confused about is the shell material and number of plies. Also, shouldn't this drum have wooden reinforcement rings? Mine doesn't.

Any "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated.

Everything checks out as you have summarised... The 5 Ply shells did not have re rings... So no mystery there... Nice looking drum too

Very nice! Gold sparkle tends to fade when exposed to light and UV rays over the years. Your drum was probably inside for most of its life. And, being true to Slingerland, the logo badge/air vent is not centered horizontally between the lugs!

As mentioned, you have the 5ply shell, which had no rings. The plies, inside to outside are maple/poplar/maple/poplar/maple. However, most shells with a wrapped finish have an outside ply of mahogany. The mahogany ply is very easy to see when removing the batter head.

Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my post. I do appreciate it. I've attached several pics that were just taken outdoors, which I believe provide a better indication of the condition of the drum. I was wondering if the plastic washers seen in a few of the pics were actually "factory issued" with Slingerland drums during that particular era?

That is a real beauty!

It is my understanding that the plastic washers is a new practice so I would assume that they are NOT FACTORY. If that is not correct, I would certainly want to know. When exactly that practice started I do not know. Who all includes them on their new drums I don't know. These plastic washers certainly have been discussed in other threads, as some think they serve a smoothing purpose, some don't think......well, like I said, this is for a different thread :)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
