**HELP**Vintage 6pc Tama Drum Set **HELP** Last viewed: 3 hours ago

When my daughter was first taking lessons I was just getting into vintage drums and bought her a 60's red sparkle Ludwig clubdate set which I cleaned up and gave her for Christmas. She played them for a while, but she finally admitted that the set she REALLY liked was a bunch of old black Tama drums that had come with the clubdates because the seller wanted to clean out his garage and which I had put in the car figuring I could use some of the parts and heads. They were a partial set; a mix of Swingstar and Imperialstar, some standard some power-toms and covered with stickers (which must have been popular in the 80's).

That was the set that floated her boat and made her want to play, so over time while looking for 60's and earlier drums for myself I kept my eye open for and tracked down some more of the 80's drums (which she found stickers for) and that's the set she still plays today a dozen years later.

I always found it funny that in a house with 60's Gretsch, Ludwig and Slingerland, she picked the 80's Tama's (which I have to admit sound and work just fine).

Just a quick update. I'm loving these drums, and can't believe my wife had me thinking about selling them just so she could park in the garage a couple weeks ago. Anyways, I've been playing on them a lot, and plan to really fix them up to make them a respectable set. The drummer in our band even used them at practice this week and said they have some potential with a little TLC. Thanks for all the posts. Now if you all can help me with the restoration process that would be great. I don't even know where to start. I know they need new heads and cymbals since the last dumbass drilled holes in the cymbals, that's about it. As far as the lugs, and bottoms, and all that lingo, keep in mind, I know little to no drum jargon, so links to the parts you are talking about would be great or just really dumbed down posts if you care to help me out. Thanks again for all the posts, I'm happy I checked on here.

Lugs are the metal things that stick out from the drum shell with the movable tension nut in them. You can see the empty holes on the bottom side of all the shells. Tension rods are what screws through the matching holes in the rims and into the lugs (tension nut) and tensions (tunes) the heads. You're missing the bottom set of lugs and it seems all the rims and heads. The bottoms are also called the 'reso' or resonant side (assembly).

Bass drum is the same except bottom would be front and batter side the back. Batter side on upright drums is the top of course.

Get some pinstripe's for the batter side and single ply clears for the reso side of those toms... that kit will howl.

Get some windex or your favorite cleaner and a good polish cloth for the hardware (chrome stuff) and start rubbin'!

Post pictures of anything that surprises or confuses you. Frankly, this kind of stuff is what a bunch of us live for... we got the fever and it's always nice to see someone else go down the primrose path. heh heh heh

Setting up the snare can be tricky. Ask your drummer or us for help on that if you need it.

Oh woe unto you... Eye Ball

And now you're in the world of drums! :D

Oh yeah, unless you're skinny, get a nice wide throne and put that butt buster throne away someplace (or sell it).

HA! Who wants a car in their garage when they can have drums! I mean come on...

You should enjoy your new kit, congrats! The bass player in my band was given an 80's, metallic blue Imperialstar by a colleague. It sounds great, though the power toms are kind of loud and boomy for the roots rock/ alt country we play. We keep it set up in our rehearsal space as my practice kit in a 22,13,16 configuration. I like it with moon gels, little silicone rectangles meant for muffling drum heads that are available at your favorite music store, to tame the boomieness.

This set also came with a 6.5 x 14 metal snare that I don't play. I put a new ambassador head on it, tuned it like my Slingy metal snare and can't get it to open up. It sounds all choked out. Any thoughts on how to loosen or open up the tone on this drum?

I have two 80`s sets and love them both. Half the battle is tuning abilities, once you can get that, u got it made on any kit.

Congrats on your Tama`s

Do your kits have the 6 1/2 x 14 metal snare? If you've got any tuning tips or special tips for this drum, I'd love to hear em. I just have a feeling it can sing with a fatter, wetter sound than I'm getting. I've tried tighter batter & looser res, looser batter and a variety of snare settings, but she just doesn't sound happy.Help
