Does anyone know what kind of hi bond tape is best for drum wrapping? Jammin sam has his hi bond tape only available with his wrap. Drummaker.com has a roll of "killer red hi bond tape for $36.40, enough to do 2-4 drum kits. Im pretty sure it must be by 3m. 3M is definatly the best adhesive I have ever seen. anyone?

I'd go for the stuff from drummaker......jamminsam's tape doesn't seem to bond as well in my experience.....if I was to do my next kit it would be the
3M waterbased contact cement that precision sells....I've had better results with that method than the tape method lately, however that is more permanent....
I tried some dap supposed equevalant today and it didnt stick woorth a sh*t.
lol read this post please.

Ya, the DAP stuff pretty much sucks. The 3M is far superior....once it bonds, its hard to remove.
The drummaker stuff is the 3M stuff...they just take off the 3M label before they ship it .
It's good...I also despise the jamminsam stuff..it has caused me some bad headaches as well as some very embarrassing situations. Apparently they now have some sort of additive which makes it bond better...but WTF is the point of a hi-bond double stick if you have to then take the extra step of doctoring it with another product ?

Sam has a adhesive promoter. Its like a primer actually. You wipe the spot your going to stick the tape to with the adhesive promoter. When we install a wood dash kit on a vehicle, we use adhesive promoter to make sure the kits sticks. Simply wipe the dash where the kit goes and it sticks like a MF.
We also use a primer installing windshields.
I wraped my 20" floor tom with sam's wrap, tape and adhesive promoter. Acetone works pretty good if no adhesive promoter is available, but you dont want to get it on any area that shows. Any adhesive sticks to a pourous surface much better that it will stick to a slick surface, however tape seems to stick to a good "CLEAN" slick surface much better that adhesive does.

I use both. I use the Jamminsam stuff which bonds the edge. I also have a roll or two of the Red stuff. I put that in strips lengthwise along the wrap. I make sure it's in the middle and again towards the edge (but not at the extreme edge). It gives a real nice bond. It's always been a nice alternative to the glue method. It sticks like snot and if needed, comes off so you can change the color of the drum. That's my method. I've never had a problem with any of my drums. They don't lift or swell or bubble or any other such nonsense that has been discussed here. They stick solid. Just a thought for you to consider.
I got my "KILLER" hi bond tape yesterday from drummaker.com. Precision does not have the tape. He is a glue your wrap on guy. He dont believe in the tape. he claims that the glue makes the wrap part of the drum and resonates better. he says the wrap might wrinkle later if not glued. Drummaker says his tape is excatly the same as jammin sam's tape, and it is not 3M. I got my roll yesterday and drummaker peeled the manufacture's name off of the cardboard roller on the inside of the roll of tape. jammin sam only sells his tape with his wrap. The way I figure, 100' should do about 10 5 piece drum kits. So each kit cost about $3.60 worth of tape. Sam charges much more that that for his tape. heres his prices. about $27.00 for a 5 piece kit. that would be $270 for 10 kits. I think 36 is a good price.
Jammin sam's tape prices:
Snares & Small Toms (3" – 12" deep) $4.00 each
Deeper Toms (13" – 16" deep) $5.00 each
18" Floor Toms (no deeper than 16") $7.00 each
Basses 10" – 16" deep
(18" – 32" head size) $7.00 each
Basses 18" – 20" deep
(18" – 32" head size) $8.00 – $10.00 each
Basses 20" – 24" deep
(18" – 32" head size) $8.00 – $10.00 each
Note: Our hi-bond tape can only be purchased with our drum wrap.

I can absolutely guarantee you that the jamminsam tape is NOT the same stuff as the drummaker stuff. I dunno if the red tape is 3M (I still think it is, IMHO), but it behaves totally differently than whatever the stuff is that jamminsam uses....
anyway...I have sorta stopped using jamminsam except when I need to have that awesome black/white onyx/agate wrap, or champagne sparkle...since he's the only guy who sells it anymore....just because his prices are significantly more expensive than the other two suppliers....he's a nice guy, it's just I cannot abide by the cost of his supplies....when I do order, I just tell him "no tape" and use glue, with taped seams at the overlap only...
Im about to wrap my kids drum project in the "WRAP YOUR DRUMS IN MOD ORANGE SPARKLE FOR $59", from ebay. I know this is a cheap warp and probably not durable enough, but I plan on using the rape method instead of using the pressure sensitiveness of the wrap. I will leave the backing on the wrap, hoping it will give it a little more durability To the wrap. I plan to apply the "KILLER HI BOND TAPE" on the shell, then cut about a inch of the backing off of the "ORANGE MOD SPARKLE" wrap. Stick that to the "KILLER HI BOND TAPE"on the shell. Apply hi bond tape on the wrap side where it is going to over lap, again peeling about an inch of the backing off of the"ORANGE MOD SPARKLE" wrap. The pressure sensitive "ORANGE MOD SPARKLE" will stick like a mofo to the "KILLER HI BOND TAPE".
"Thats my plan and I'm stickin' to it!"
