With Hi Hat cymbals, are the 2 cymbals the same weight or is one heaver than the other? Is the top thin/bottom thicker or the other way around?

Usually the top hat is lighter weight than the bottom.

as atomicmorganic stated, yes that's usually how it is top cymbal being lighter than the bottom, if you collect enough cymbals in Hi hat sizes experiment with different weights top and bottom! different brands mixed together to come up with your own sound!

Thanks for the reply. Yea, I was thinking about trying to find some cheap splash cymbals maybe used to make 10" or 12" hi hats for my cocktail kit.

Thought maybe if I could find 2 different weight splashes, it might work. But I have seen people use 2 12" wuhans and say they got a good sound.

I guess I could always just spend the extra and buy mini hats. But I'm always tryin' to save a dollar.

To 2nd VTM2000, I've "matched" a single '60s 602 with a '50s Zildjian 13 here of late, and like it quite a bit.

Also a '50s and 60's Zildjian 14 inch combo that is working well for me too.

So do any of you people use the heavy one on top? I have a pair of 14" A's from the 60's and the weight seems to be almost the same. The "bottom" one is much cleaner and looks way better.

i currently use a thin 15" crash with a rivet as bottom and a heavier 15" old K as top and i very much like the sound it gives!

Not at all your everyday hi hat :p
