hi-hat-top cymbal slipping...the fix??? Last viewed: 36 minutes ago

I gig with a Spur-Lok Hercules hi-hat/with 15" Zildjians. The top cymbal slips all over the place. No matter what size felts I use,the nut tight as possible ,after one song the top cymbal has slipped about 3/8's of an inch. I am sure Shelley Mann didnt have this problem. On his Blackhawk live lps. you can hear clean crisp hi-hat sounds all the way though each song. What do you do to eliminate this problem,,if it is a problem for you that is??

Thanks,Vati

Are you saying the cymbal itself, is slipping or sliding back and forth? or is the clutch slipping on the hi hat metal pole?

I use a double nut on the bottom of the clutch. This prevents the nut to unscrew which always happens to me with a single nut. Other than the hole in the cymbal being real big or the clutch shaft dia very small not sure why it would slip that much. I use Paiste 15"s on a Slingerland hi hat clutch and stand. I like the top cymbal a little loose and there's minimum slipage. 1/8" or less if I had to guess while rockin.

Just to add.......perhaps if the cymbal hole is larger some type of short plastic spacer to go over the clutch threads might help keep them centered?

Glenn is right, sounds like a slippage problem. You need to make a rubber sleeve for the hi-hat rod. If the hole in the cymbal is larger than the diameter of the rod, a sleeve will help keep the cymbal centered. Take one of those plastic sleeves from a cymbal stand, cut off the bottom disc and just use the sleeve section. The felts on both side of the cymbal should hold the sleeve in place well enough.

Too many great drums to list here!
