The only difference between the Hollywood Ace and the Artist model

is the strainer. The Artist has a zoomatic strainer and the Hollywood Ace

has a rapid strainer. Apart from that they are the same drum, same shell etc.

Nice drums.

I have a Hollywood Ace that I like very much. Great tone and a great looking drum!

Would it be too much to ask to see pics of these 2 strainers?

Yes, same drum except for strainer. I also have one of these, and it's been my go-to snare for the past 5 years, beating out DWs, a Craviotto, and a Supraphonic, among others...

With older drums, though, it's really hit-and-miss. You might get an AMAZING drum, or you might get a dud. Good luck!

I didn't bid on this snare, because it had a small crack on the wrap, however it sold for $170 for that price I should have tired to get it.

Another Slingerland with the same shell is the 8-lug Student model... a lot sexier with the single flange hoops and clips.

They were offered with sticksavers as an option, so switching them out it you prefer wouldn't be much of a Vintage sin, maybe a little slap on the wrist......:)

You can get one at about the same price.

That really depends on what year & which Artist model you ordered. The Artist model was offered with an option of 8 or 10 lugs & also had a solid steambent Maple shell for many years. The Hollywood Ace is really a Deluxe Student model with 8 lugs. The shells were the old Slingy 3-ply (Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany) standby, which in my opinion was one of the greatest sounding shells in history, but it is not the same drum as the Artist. The interior of the Artist shells were finished better, the re-rings were slightly fatter & there was a little more attention to detail. The Artist eventually was fitted with a ply shell, but for many years was the same as the Radio King. The Ace is still a great snare, but in todays market, I wouldn't pay $170 for one period!...much less one with a cracked shell.

Just my 2 cents.........
