Hoping to snag a Ludwig Mach 5 today!! Last viewed: 17 hours ago

Loading...

I called about a Thermogloss Ludwig Mach 5 on Kijiji a few days ago for $300. The guy was going out to supper and by the time he got home he told me someone had offered him $500. Then it popped back up at $700 on Kijiji. I was kinda ****ed and moved on. I came home with a 22" Ludwig reso head yesterday that I got for free and couldn't help thinking that the timing would have been too perfect.... Well, during the night I checked my email and he just offered them to me for $400. I'm waiting for news, fingers crossed!

As for info, what I gather is that they were made only in 1974/75, M/P/M shells, came with 5 deep Supersensitives (this one doesn't have it) and that they weren't big sellers due to either the lugs being "ahead of their time" or that they came with the SS which made them an expensive offering at the time. I'm assuming that finding a beige thermogloss bd hoop is going to be a PITA. I have a friend who builds guitars that might be finish one to match instead of playing the fleabay game.

I'd love to snag some Atlas hardware and a period-correct SS and reproduce the catalogue pic.

Those shells will sing, my friend...Hopefully the drum gods are on your side so you can snag them up!! The Mach kits aren`t as common as the other lines of Ludwig...You will like them...

I have a 26-14-18 and 14 matching snare thermo Mach kit that just rumbles...I`m looking for a 16 FT and 13RT to add to the kit...I use coated Emps for the bats and coated Ambs for the reso sides...

Good luck!!

Cheers

Hey Grantro!

I've been digging through the back pages of VDF so I knew that you were one of the few proud owners of a Mach kit here. Thanks for the info on heads! I'm restoring (well, revamping) a late 50s WFL 6 lug snare in my spare time.I'm sure that the M/P/M shell will work great with this kit. I was going to go with gold sparkle on this snare but now I'm thinking about doing a kind of beige/gold duco thing (it was blue/silver duco before it was painted to crudely match tigers eye pearl).

Btw, do you still have the 15 x 12 tom in the beige finish by any chance? A "Mach 6" would be pretty cool!

The 15x12 tom I have is a wrap called maple cortex...I still have it, but, not sure what to do with it yet...Pm me an offer and we`ll go from there...It does have a Premier mount on it (not by me), but, the wrap is in great shape!!

I think that jccabinents would do a great job of the duco finish your looking for on your snare...That is, if you are not doing it yourself...

Cheers

WEll, he screwed me over a second time! After screwing me around initially, changing the price, then writing me back to offer me the kit for $400 he makes me wait a day w/ no reply, then writes me to say that "unfortunately I am unlucky" and that he just sold the kit. I simply wrote back that yes I am unlucky to have crossed paths with you. I'm gonna go hide that Ludwig kick reso head that is still staring at me in the dining room as I eat my breakfast.

On the bright side I got offered a Big R shell pack for $350 Cdn by I guy I buy gear from who's both trustworthy and super nice.

I got my Mach kit off of Ebay for $450. 22/12/13/16 in silk red. The kit is dated 1970 so obviously Ludwig was making these kits earlier than 1974.

Oooo, mach love! I just got myself a 76 mach lugged luddy. 26-15-20 in green sparkle. I'm in love! I know it's really unlikely, but I'd love to find a matching 16 or 18.

Wow! A Mach Five from 1970? I wonder if the shells were old 'shelf queens' that got used later. I don't know much about that series, and have never played one. I have seen a few out and about, and always thought they sound great.

What a jerk! We've all run into guys like this.

That set in the picture in the first post appears to be wrapped in Maple Cortex which is a wood grain formica type wrap. Ludwig dropped their natural finish wood drums in favor of these wraps in the early/mid 70's. I don't know if that makes you feel any better about missing out on them. The maple cortex is okay and wears like iron but is nowhere near as pretty as the actual "Thermogloss" finished drums.

The mach drums were no different from any of Ludwigs other drums of the time they just had the one piece high tension style lugs installed in place of the normal pair of lugs for each tension point. Same shells and finishes. You could put together any sort of set you wanted with those lugs as a special order.
