I am really surprised that Ludwig is in the lead. Maybe I should give NEW luddy's a second look. Has anyone really sat with a top of the line set of DW collectors? I don't own a set but I have several snares. I have a good friend who owns several DWs, and I think they are the most creative for a major manufacturer. The VLT, VLX line sounds incredible and the maple mahogany really has an almost vintage feel. I also think the yamaha Phoenix are worth a look, really nice sounding shells, warm with a little more sustain.I still love the sound of a vintage kit, my favorite is my Rogers kit but if were talking about currently produced drums DW really has done some good stuff.
DW, I reckon they have turned a corner of late. My Jazz Series kit is sweet. I'm a little confused about new Ludwig too. Based on the Legacy kit on show at the London Drum Show a couple of years back they have not achieved in my mind the goal of bringing back that old sound.
