How many lugs on 14" tom Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

In the late 70's & 80's Ludwig went thru a phase where they put more lugs on the "power toms". My kits are from '79. Both of my 14's have ten lugs, as do my 15's. My 12's & 13's have 8 lugs. There is no resonance problem with any of them, extra lugs and all. In fact, a local drummer just pieced together a 6-ply kit because he liked the sound of mine so much....

Here you can see one of my 13's with the 8 lugs....

Yes, and the 14" 10 hole rims are used as a very common snare drum configuration anyway (as bigdan noted), so even if it wasn't for Ludwig's move into that market the rims would still be around and fairly easy to find.

And, if you're into marching drums at all, you know you can find 14/12, 15/10, 15/12, 16/10 and 16/12... actually, just about any rims you need are out there somewhere (I know this thread's on a 14" tom, but just wanted to make the point that odd-sized rims are available).

I agree with RogerSling, build it however the customer wants it. I voted 8, however... that's my preference.
