How stable is Ludwig wrap from mid 60's? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Just got a gold sparkle Ludwig kit made in '65.

Doing a gig tomorrow evening out in the open air.

Might be sunny on me, I don't know the venue.

How stable is 60's Ludwig wrap? Is it going to fade or get black spots if any UV light hits it?

I know psych red is extremely unstable but never heard if any other wraps from the same era having issues.

Thanks!

As long as your outdoor gig doesn't last a year, it will be fine.Keep on Pl

I`d be very careful, as those uv rays are strong and your drums are vintage which is never a good combination.Hope for a over cast day for you and best to be safe rather than sorry.Best of luck...

I have found that my Ludwig kits with sparkle wrap hold up fine in a 4 hour gig in the sun. I won't use my diamond or marine pearl ones in the sun. Also, I don't let any of them sit where sunlight coming through a window hits them. If I have a gig where I know it is in the sun and the temp is higher than 80 I always use a kit with a real wood veneer wrap.

I have had wrap loosen up in extreme heat, like in the low 90's and then tighten back up. On my Gretsch. So now on outside summer gigs I use my silver mist wrap Rogers. They reflect the sunlight instead of absorbing it. Dark wraps will get really hot.

I love me some vintage Ludwigs but I am glad for new wraps. I have a 2012 classic maple champagne sparkle that I have played everywhere, inside, outside, in the sun, in the cold. The wrap is high bonded to the shell and has'nt moved an inch in around 300 gigs or so and the color looks the same as it did the day I bought them. I take care of them as well but it's nice to know they can handle some pretty extreme stuff.

From personal experience, I've played several outside gigs in the sun in the almost 20years iv'e been playing since I was a teenager. And i've used vintage kits on every single gig. I've even used my 50's white pearl slingerlands a couple of times and my black onyx rogers. Mind you I would lean towards my sparkle kits over the pearls. But realize wrap fade is not an overnight process . If that was the case, people would be matching kits together by throwing the drums in the sun for a while. But it just doesn't work that quick. I think you'll be fine. I wouldn't leave them in the sun all day, but I think you'll be fine.

That's pretty much what I was saying, fade on drums or wrap separation doesn't happen overnight. No need to worry, your vintage drums are not wimps.Cooked Egg

For his sake, sure hope you`re right johnnyringo.Suns`s rays are much stronger these days on some fifty yr. old plus glue and wrap,no matter what colour. To each their own... but i wouldn`t trust my 67` Rogers in the sun for more than a photo shoot.

I ended up being in the shade :D

But thanks guys for the input, just wanted to make sure the older 60's sparkles wouldn't do a psych red on me and go south in an hour!

I've had other newer wraps in the sun never a problem.

I wouldn't have played these mid day in direct sun, I figured a early evening gig with the possibility of some sun would have been a safe bet but ended up being pretty much shaded anyway.
