How to measure drum head size? Please help Last viewed: 43 minutes ago

I have a 1980s gretsch set. I was told that to measure head size I had to take off head and measure from the outside of the drum rim to the other outside rim. When I do this I get measurements such as 14 and 3/8 as an example. But when I look to buy heads the sizes are 14 or 15 but nothing in the middle. Am I measuring wrong? Is it because it's from 1980s? Please help. I am still new with drumming a little.

Measure from the outside of the shell, not the rim. Modern drums measure, for a 14" inch shell as an example, 13 7/8". so you would buy a 14" drum head. some vintage drums may be larger and there are drum companies that make modern heads a little bit larger to accommodate them. Some of the experts here will chime in with more specific info. . . James

Just measure the shell size, like FatherTime posted. If you have a head that fits the drum, take it to the music store with you and all the guess work will be gone.
