How to tell the ply of a slingerland Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Singe ply should be maple, but I do not see a light colored poplar core ply,I could not enlarge the pic,but it looks like one ply to me,and dark like the mahogany int.If it was a one ply Mahogany shell I think that would be quite uncommon if indeed such an animal exists.

Some more close up pictures with better lighting would solve the discrepancy in no time.

-just FYI...poplar is variable in its coloration. I have pieces of it in my shop that are streaked with green, purple, black, brown and blonde. It could very well be that the dark color is just a dark piece or section of the poplar. No one in their right mind would ever use walnut as a core ply in a ply drum shell. Walnut is never a secondary wood!

Probably not in the sixtiesBack in the 20s, 30s, and very early 40s they did.... not in the sixties.Check out the article on Slingerland wood shells by the good Doctor in the Drum Guide.

Yep, that's where I got the info but I guess I didn't read closely enough to see the dates that each wood was used.

Thanks for the correction.

Interesting, I also have a similar situation with one of my snares. It's an 8 lug WMP Gold and Black Niles badge #78726. That dates it to the early/mid 60's. It has a zoomatic strainer and the extended snare butt end, a muffler and the Slingy triple flange hoops. That hardware configuration should make it an Artist series snare as no other model should be set up that way. The catalogs only show the Artist series with the zoomatic and extended butt end. So I was sure that it was a single ply Artist as the catalogs state that all the Artist series are single ply. However, upon close examination I do see that it is a 3 ply shell, maple/poplar/and then that dark mahogany outer layer. It also has the "P" stamp which usually designates the mahagony outer ply for a pearl covering. So my question is: 1.Did they make the Artist series with a 3 ply shell? 2. And if so why do the catalogs specify that the Artist models all have a single ply shell?Hmmmm

1. Yes, and solid shells as well

2. Just one of those "Slingerland" catalog eccentricities.
