Maybe a silly question... but I am intrigued still by the look of an oyster pearl wrap (for example). Does anyone know how these wraps were originally made? I'm assuming it may be the same way they are currently made but I don't know that either! Google searches turned up very little..

this is the modern way of making drum wraps. probibly the same as say vintage wraps but updated.
i don't recall the exact methods of making drum wraps, but they are basically the following:
glass glitters and sparkles have 3 layers:
-white pvc based (usually)
-sparkles or glass in the middle
-top layer
-then heated and compressed to make the wrap (or something to that effect)
this top layer is what's colored...not the sparkles or glass. if anyone has ever had a scrap piece of wrap and was able to split it, you can see its tinted. these come is sheets of 24x54.
for satins and swirls, it comes on a giant roll. from what i remember, its made by a plastics company, not a company that makes drum wraps. this is why drums wrapped with this material has only one seam on larger drums. unlike sparkles, pearls or marbles that require 2 pieces of wrap for 18" drums and larger.
as for oysters, pearls, electric blue (no longer made), electric turq (no longer made), marbles and others of the like, from what i heard that material is made in a large block, and the wrap is shaved off. that's why you don't get a sheet that looks the same. these come is sheets of 24x54.
some vintage wraps that originally did not have a pvc backing (oysters and pearls) would shrink over time. this includes electric blue and electric turquoise which is still no longer avail.
black oyster is still popular and is now avail with a pvc backing. the pvc backing allows the wrap not to shrink.
