OK, I'm on ebay looking for a vintage Ludwig tom, I see just what I'm looking for, a 9x13 blue oyster pearl (bowling ball) tom. The guy has a bin for $395 plus shipping! What? Are people really that delusional? Not even when the market was in better shape would a drum like that go for that much. A few years ago I sold an 8x12 Ludwig blue oyster pearl keystone badge tom for just over $200 on ebay. I don't understand.

He probably is nervous that he has something that might be really valuable and doesn't want to underprice himself. It probably won't sell and then he'll likely repost it at a reduced price until he gets into the range that people will actually consider the BIN.
OR...
Because of all the new seller fees and Paypal money/hostage taking going on with EBay, people with such items for sale are going to be forced to increase their prices in order to compensate for all the hands in the cookie jar charges and new world order money exchanges.
OR...
Someone just like you looking for the same drum, will drop the money and get what he wants and be done with it, thus, rendering the drum you wanted, unavailable. Maybe another one will come along, though....heh

There is no way I would pay over $400 for any tom, so I guess I'll wait until he reduces the price.
Another explanation might be that this seller is taking note of what others are selling these for and adjusting his/her price accordingly. The biggest problem is that those high-priced sellers (we all know who they are!) are very rarely selling their drums for these sky-high prices. Yes, Ebay is really charging more in fees now, so that might be some of the reason. Still, I have to think that most sellers are just trying to get as much money as possible for these vintage drums now, as there will be a time when most drummers out there won't have much interest in them. I love my three vintage kits, but am totally aware that there will come a time when they might not hold much value for future generations. I REALLY hope I'm wrong, because my kits (Ludwig, Rogers and Slingerland) are just too cool and so much a part of our drumming history!
That "bowling ball" tom has been listed numerous times on ebay with that BIN amount...He also lists a 12"x8" for the same price I think...This has been going on for at least a year now...You`d think he would lower the BIN due to the fact no one has bought it!! Kleening

Greed, plain and simple.
I agree with most of the comments above, and really don't have a lot to add.
However, check out current eBay item #221013930676. 70s Bowling Ball BOP concert tom. The same seller has a complete octaplus set with it all listed seperately. I'm 99% sure he had it listed as a set a couple of weeks back.
Hope this helps...

Well I for one have over-paid on ebay for parts just because I needed them and they were not your every day listing kind of parts. So these guys are just waiting for the guy (with a good job)that wants them bad enough to pay the price. Yes they are greedy, no doubt anout that, and you just want to send the a message saying,,,REALLY, thanks for helping me out buddy! I have been looking for a floor tom for my sbp Clubdate for a year and I just know when I do find it, it will be one of those 800.00 ones. I would rather sell my kit for 800.00 and be done with the worries of finding the ft than paying that kind of money. Oh well ,back to work,
JC
Thank you!

I don't understand why ebay is still discussed if ebay is disliked to the degree that it is. I don't shop on it anymore (like a fairly large segment on this forum) and so do not come across these types of listings. It seems to me if you pull out of ebay, these things are not an issue. You never see them. The only times I open ebay is to monitor current market value of that one segment. Even that is taken with a grain of salt.
