I purchased a 50's Ludwig bop 18/14/12 in 92 for $100. Bad condition, but still. Wound up selling it for $400. I haven't seen any deals since (what I call) the "Nirvana boom". I wasn't able to find good beat up drums in pawn shops after 94. Grunge brought together a bunch of garage bands with cheap old equipment.

Thanks for the advice....but, I'm pretty confident in this one. I mean....who has got over $2K to throw away on an old beat up snare drum these days?

I won an orphaned Cadi Green tom a few years ago....$535 on the Bay. Knowone was willing to bid more than $530 on 'the drum with "rattle can' gold sprayed hardware. I had a gut feeling that there was gold plating under the paint.....I was right. I'm very happy with my purchase. That being said....how many out there would be willing to pay $500 for an orphaned cadi green (50's) Gretsch tom even if they knew it had gold plated hardware under the gold paint?? Not many I suspect.

It is a rare drum....but it is also a very limited market for such drums. I don't think I could get $500 for it these days - nor would I want to try.

I'm happy with the amount I paid....for two reasons: 1) it is a rarity and I like it 2) if you had to buy a NEW Gretsch 9x13 tom ...you'd pay more than $500 for it....so...to me....the current drum value is still more than there.

Same with the snare drum:

I ordered a custom built LangPercussion drum a few years ago and by the time everything washed out I had about $2000 into it. So, the Gretsch-Gladstone is keeping its value at more than $2K. It's a part of history too....that has to be worth something.

Outbid by $30 in the last few seconds. I could not justify spending 'our' money on this drum right now when we owe more than $4K in income tax this year. Oh well....there will be another day I'm sure of it. It's only a drum.

Exactly! In a bidding 'war' with folks with deep pockets....yes - who knows how far.

I'm hoping to trade or sell some of my collection to fuel my buying but at the same time keep family peace.

I have some very nice Valje drums that I think are at least worth $4000 in today's market and maybe even more. I would gladly use them to buy a nice Gretsch Gladstone drum. Sure, I'd probably have some 'seller's remorse' but I'd get over it. I did have a deal to trade them for two collectible snare drums recently and my two grown daughters stepped in and came down on my like a hurricane for wanting to get rid of the Valjes. After all they 'grew up with them." I have no idea that they we so attached to them. They don't play. I will check in once in a while with them to see if some of the 'sentimentality' has worn over time. My luck - and knowing my children - it will only grow over time.
