i WILL buy cymbals! Last viewed: 20 hours ago

I've drummed off and on for a few years. Played guitar constantly for tbe last 15 years.

I own a Premier set from the 90s. I had a 60s Yamaha set but I gave it to someone who I thought would enjoy it more. I even restored the Yamaha set!

ANYWAY

I recently found some guys at my work who play music. We started jamming a little here and tbere in my basement. After a few times of having them over I decided I want to buy some real cymbals!

After all these years I've NEVER had a ride. And my two crashes are a Pearl brand cheapo and cracked Camber. My hats are junky ProBeat.

I like to play punk rock and 90s alternative- think Ramones to Misfits, to 90s Weezer and Offspring.

Talk me in or out of buying Zildjian ZBT cymbals. Like i said, I'm a guitar player and I'm sure ANY cymbals with a brand name (zildjian, sabian, paiste) is a step up from the cheap crap.

If you get lucky you may get a good Zildjian ZBT or ZHT or ZXT but your best bet is to step it up and get some Zildjian A's. Otherwise there's a good chance you still won't like your cymbals and your money will be wasted. Maybe start with a ride and hi hats and get some crashes later if you can't afford to do it all at once.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Get the best cymbal you can afford, and there's nothing wrong with buying used (in some cases that may even be better).

There are several ways to make cheap drums sound better, but there's not much you can do to make a cheap cymbal sound better.

But the main determination should be if you like how it sounds. I have a friend with a setup of sweet 1960s A Zildjian crashes who uses a ZHT ride with them. I was shocked at first glance, but that particular ride cymbal works well with those particular crashes.

I'd recomend buying used cymbals from higher lines. If you're patient, you can get them for very pleasant price and they'll sound much better than new cymbals for the same money. On the other hand, if you like loud punk rock, even cheap cymbals could do you good, as you want very bright and simple sound.

I'm from the if you can't afford new and good, buy used and good crowd. The cheaper cymbal lines can sound ok,but won't sound as good as pro grade stuff.

Why buy twice also. Why buy entry lever cymbals now,and then want to upgrade later? You won't possibly recoupe anywhere near your initial investment, maybe 40-50% tops.

Spend a little more now on used cymbals that sound good, and forget about new entry level stuff.

Remember, unless you're a cymbalsmith, you can't make a crappy sounding cymbal sound any better than it already does.

Buy used,buy good.....buy once.

Pawnshops, pawnshops, pawnshops! I just picked up an 18" Zildjian A crash for $70 in great condition. This particular pawnshop has 4 or 5 nice Zildjian cymbals, I'll be hitting them up again in a few weeks.

I decided to buy used cymbals. Don't wanna buy the low end stuff either.

I'll get them once piece at a time. Ride, then hats, then a few crashes.

I've gotten a few PM's about selling me cymbals- I've answered everyone. Thanks for all the offers, but I am only interested in one single ride from someone for now.

I would suggest you locate some Sabian SR cymbals in larger sizes. Try a 19 Medium weight in the AAX style and 20 or 21 Medium weight in the HHX style as crashes. The ride would be a 22 Medium Heavy weight in the AAX style. You have to search out a heavier Medium, but they are out there. Hats might be a 16 Heavy bottom in the HH style and a 16 Medium top in the AA style. Those would pin you against the wall and stand up to any of the music you listed. They are also cheap enough.
