Identify Yamaha Drums. Did I strike gold? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Loading...

I recently bought an immaculate Yamaha kit on craigslist, however I don't know what kind it is. From the lugs, (and my fingers are crossed here) they look like Recording Customs. However they've all been debadged, so there is no way to really know for sure. It's clear there have been mods to the drums, but everything is very professionally done. I mean these things are in PERFECT condition.

I've seen that Recording Customs have a tom mount on the bass drum, however mine doesn't. Looking at the inside of the shell, I can see the outline of where the mount used to be, but once again, it has been filled in very professionally, making it a virgin kick.

I'm really excited about these, and I think I struck a damn fine deal. The sizes are 24" kick, 12" 13" 14" mounted toms, 16" and 18" floor toms.

Oh yeah, did I mention I got them all for $350? :D

I haven't gotten around to putting my full cymbal set up on it yet.

The rooms a bit of a mess haha.

No tom mount?

Any help would be great, as I'm no good with vintage stuff haha.

Thanks!

Some pictures show a bit of orange-peel in the finish, and THAT plus no badges tells me that it is a Recording Custom kit resprayed to approximate the much-desired and defunct Quartz Grey finish.

Be that as it may, those are a friggin' STEAL, and some of the best production drums ever made. Enjoy! Cool1

Those plies appear to show another species of wood as the core. any chance you could take a head off and snap a few pics? It sure looks like a multi-specie layup ... which would be a strike against these being RCs.

Those are RC's, according to the hardware. If the person who did the work applied a finish to the bearing edges, you would be alternate dark lines. This is because the ply panels are cross-laminated and end grain shows, which looks much darker with finish on it.

Hey, even if they were NOT RC's, and still one of Yamaha's upscale kits, that price is STILL a steal. You have to remember that Yamaha really does not make drums that suck, even at the low end of the price point scale.

Those are NOT Yamaha Recording Custom drums. Your drums appear to have clear interiors instead of stained interiors and while the long lugs are similar, they are not the same one piece lugs used on the RC series.

The lugs on the Floor toms also look too short for an RC.

The bass drum claws are not the same as used on a Recording Custom kit.

The kit is not from the Rock Tour Custom series either.

My guess is that they are from the Stage Custom series.

The good news is that Yamaha makes great stuff and you have a lot of drums and set up options. I am sure they will tune up nicely and sound great.

I think the orange you see is the camera, in person these things look like they were made yesterday. It's very obvious that this guy set them off in a nice environment and didn't touch them for awhile. He said he dislocated his elbow and it never healed right or something like that.

Also in regards to the bass drum claws, I noticed they were different, but don't much mind. These are normal claws and they have a small foam strip under the claw so it doesn't contact the hoop. I'm lifting the corner of it in one of the pictures.

And I also took a few of the inside of one of them, they're all identical wood wise.

Thanks for the help!

there isn't a shadow in the wood, there is a ring of slightly darker wood on the drum itself. The picture is a bit light, in person it is a darker wood, about the color of the darker ring in these pictures, if that makes any sense.

I believe JR was referring to orange-peel which is a term used when paint does not have a smooth looking/feeling surface. This happens a lot on refinished drums and sometimes on brand new products like cars. It can be eliminated with a lot of sanding and coats of lacquer with more sanding between coats, but it can take several rounds of that before it is no longer noticeable.

They're still nice drums regardless. Enjoy them!

yea i concur with the previous post. those are deff. not recording customs. all the recording customs had a black "piano" influenced stain on the inner shell. these look to be in the tour range or stage.

you'll find it here

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/yamaha_catalogs_drum_sets_1986.htm

notice the bottom of the recording customs, you can see the black tint in the shell.
