Your drum is not a re-wraped drum.I have seen many M.I.J. drums from the 60's with the wrap like that on the edges..Also the wood edges look like they have not been re-cut...The wrap looks thin like it should be also..Mikey

Great looking little girl! That is an original grommet. I've cut myself on far too many, and the wrap is in really good condition. It is a Star, the edges are evenly cut and true roundover. In my experience, Pearl ran a little flatter or sharper.
I'd give those edges a kiss with 220 just polish them and your heads will slide easier. I would try Aquarian Z-100s on this one. I have them on mine and they sound terrific and they are couple of bucks less than those "other" heads.
Great little project.
BTW, this is an early drum, probably 63-65

Thanks Jonni...I was waiting for you to reply...I did lightly sand the edges with 220...I think I will try the Aquarians...Where is the best place to purchase these? Do they also sound decent on the thicker ply MIJ drums as well?
Cheers

The best place I have to get them is a little on campus at OU, but GC is your best bet. They are single ply, so should if the edges are not too sharp. They are fairly inexpensive at GC, but call ahead to see what the availability on sizes. They normally have 14" but each store is all it's own stuff and the department manager pretty much decides own discretionary goods.
