Impossible quest? Last viewed: 9 minutes ago

These may not be vintage really, the Yamaha Drum Vault doesn't give the year but they are made in Japan per the badges.

I bought what's in the picture Saturday at a garage sale for a few bucks. MIJ, Yamaha Recording Custom, Bass Drum and Tom, one tom arm.

Both drums are complete, but there's no "Tom Holder", they're in pretty decent shape and you can easily see all scratches in the picture.

Will I be able to find what I need to complete this kit? Is it worth it to try finding at least a floor tom and making a 4-piece kit with it?

Advice from experts please before I waste my money... thanks.

Watch ebay! Patience. You can also buy a 2 tom holder w/ an additional hole for cymbal to replace the present single mount, add another rack tom, snare ...

Does anyone know if the color is quartz grey? That's the only "Grey" I can find googling these drums.

Looks like quartz gray to me. You don't see that finish very often.

Thanks Al (my pal) ;) - yeah I tend to lean towards the bizarre more than most (or at least stumble across it regularly). And when one deal is finished in a couple weeks, every one of my five kits will be either MIJ or from a Japanese company (good thing I have my Ludwig snare).

So come on you guys, some of you have seen every possible kit and configuration. Any conjecture about how hard it will be to find a matching floor tom? Any recommendations for alternatives? Would you just sell what I found and chase a different dragon?

Just be patient. I see them every month on eBay in singles or full kits. That's one of my favorite Yamaha RC finishes. I had to be patient a long time before I finally found an RC 16" floor tom that matched my kit. Mine is cherry wood or wine or whatever Yamaha calls it. I paid more for it than I did my entire RC kit. I added an 8" tom and a 16" floor tom. That kit is unreal and it sounds fantastic. I got a good deal on my initial kit for 400.00 on CL here locally. 22/14ft/13/12/10 toms. Now I have a kit that is totally versatile for any recording or live siutation. You can too, just stick with it as it may take awhile since quartz grey is a rare RC finish.
