There were 2 versions that I know of... one was deeper, like you have described and the other was shorter. I think the difference is when they were made -- the longer ones are pre-1970s (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm just going off of my experience -- I got a shorter one with my kit I bought in the early 70s, but had seen the deeper ones prior to that).

I never could seem to get enough leverage with it, so I bought a Sears Craftsman T handle (1/4") with the appropriate socket and used that baby for years. Still have both of them (for sentimental sake, I guess)...
