I think Bun has mentioned having one or more examples like that. I think he has even mentioned seeing one where they used a whole stack of badges as a spacer.

The badges were there in a bin handy and when the guy on the line needed to "McGyver" it somehow to make it work so he can get on to the next one they grabbed what was available.

I doubt it's blank, you're just looking at the back side.

Here is a picture of the date, now that I look at it, maybe 1960?Real hard to tell. If anyone is interested, 3 more exact ones are for sale. They are on LA, SD & OC CL in CA.Link: http://http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/msg/3925041308.htmlI'm getting married. All good! Cool Dude

Looks like it has all the attributes of a 1961-63 to me. What's on the butt? WFL or Ludwig?

I've got a 1963 Jazzfest pre serial number for comparison

Old script Ludwig on the butt. It's really smudged so it's somewhere in 60-63.

The P-87 throw off has WFL on it.

Mine's a mid 50's "masonite" shelled WFL. A failed WFL cost cutting experiment. My outer WFL badge has about 6-8 WFL badges onside used for spacers.

I suppose the masonite shell was pretty thin and there were no spacers at hand when the drum was built?

I doubt that it is a blank keystone. It's probably the back of the badge that we see...face turn towards the shell. Guess we'll never know.

Have been collecting for many years Ludwig items/drums. I have been following this thread, as I estimate I have had close to 500 drums/snares, and have never seen this! Until yesterday!! I received a 62 cocktail, and it has an air hole in the lower part of the shell.....on the inside, is a badge. Interesting.

The interesting and telling thing about both drums is; apparently that's how someone on the Ludwig assembly line dealt with blow-outs when the vent holes were drilled. It's a good solution if you think about it. Reinforces the vent perfectly.
