Introduction an question about a '67 Ludwig Drum Set Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi!

My name is Jule, and I live in Venice, Italy. I'm 25 years old, I'm a drummer, and play since when I was 11 years old. Nice to meet you all!!

The reason I am writing to you today is that I have recently buy a Ludwig Blue Oyster Drum Set, and from the badge serial number I discover it was made in 1967. However, I have some doubts about the model, the kind of woods and number of layers. I think that it could be a Hollywood model, but I am not sure about this.

Please, can you help me?

I apologise for my bad English, thank you guys!

Hi Julie,

Welcome

I believe you are correct...the kit appears to be a Hollywood kit, but missing the 2nd rack tom. A downbeat kit would have a 20" bass drum and 14" floor tom, in addition to the 12" rack tom and of course, the 4x14 snare. I believe it would also have a rail mount for the rack tom (not the double one you have there) and a mount on the bass drum for a cymbal arm. You have a 12" rack tom, 16" floor tom and 22" bass drum, right? Regardless...you have a great kit there in a desirable finish! As for the wood...it should be 3-ply Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany with Maple reinforcement rings and painted white interior. I hope this helps. I'm no expert, but I will share whatever information I have.

Hi Aaron!

Thank you for your fast reply. I'm glad that you say that this set is a good kit. It' s my first vintage Ludwing, my first vintage purchase, and I'm a beginner about this awesome world of vintage drum sets, so I haven' t made a completely mistake. The kit has a 13'' rack tom (not 12'') a 16'' floor tom and a 22'' bass drum. Maybe it can be a modify hollywood kit.

Thank you for your help and informations man! They're very precious for me!

No problem...and sorry for misspelling your name, Jule!

You might actually be missing a 12" tom. I think the Hollywood came with 2 12" toms or maybe a 12" and 13". When you have the 13" mounted, does the keystone badge point toward you or toward the crowd?

The badge is not in view on the mounted tom so i would thing it is the 13 for the other side and you are missing the 8x12 and it is for sure a hollywood... IMO

Hi,

thanks a lot men!

Sorry, but I have another question and this time is about restoration. I start to renovate my Holly, so I run up aginst a little obstacle. Inside the rack tom shell there are some rust stains, that starts from the mounting screws.

I think to use a rust remover, but I'm not sure because I could cause some damages.

In order to not damage the painted white interior, how can I clean theese stains? Do you know any alternative and less aggressive methods?

This a pics of the stains: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/141/luddy5.jpg/

Thank you all, kind regards.

Hi Jule!

Glad you've found the forum.

That rust isn't nearly as bad as some I've seen, but it is always good to clean it up. I normally disassemble all the kits I gather for a deep cleaning and repair. While I have them apart, I check the parts for stress and age cracks... everything. The rust on the screws should come off with a wire brush. I TRY to keep from removing paint, but that is not always possible. Rust stains on the wood will normally come off with a light brushing. I happen to use an old tooth brush.

Nice kit!

Don`t try to clean that with the drum still assembled,..completely strip it down and clean individually all the parts,..do the whole kit,..it`s over due !!

That paint can be cleaned off but do not use anything that has an oder to it,..I would first try a hot damp scrub side of a kitchen sponge, and use white cloths not colored.

Keep us updated and you`ll get good info and results here !! Some of the guys here forgot more about restoreing drums than most are willing to learn !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Hi men!

I'll follow your invaluable advices and then I'll surely take some pics at the end of the rack tom restoration.

Thank you, you're always kind and competent.
