Is a Supraphonic LM400 from the 70's with extra air holes a crime, I mean worth it. Last viewed: 1 second ago

I came across this Ludwig Supraphonic 1970's LM400 snare, but the owner says the person who owned it before him drilled extra air vent holes in the middle of every two lugs at the bottom portion of the middle ridge (does that make sense?) CryBaby

He is selling it to me for little less than $100 and it's missing the muffler. Overall it's in good condition. Just dusty and a little grimy.

My question to you is, is it worth buying and putting a new muffler in place and use it or should I just let it go?

Just curios what you all think and would do.

If you can get it for $75 or less I would consider it. It's probably not going hurt the overall sound of the drum but it does make me want to cry a little thinking about it....

It would be nice to rescue it and give it a new lease on life!

... and yes, it should be a crime to deface a drum like that!!! ;)

So very true! Why would anyone want to deface such an iconic drum? So very sad.

I find it odd that someone would even bother. Extra holes in a snare tend to dry out the tone. Which is odd to me. Supra's are pretty dry to begin with. Also, what a lot of effort for something that a few strips of tape could've accomplished..

It was probably someone who came up during the OCDP/Truth craze. I was a huge Blink-182 and Box Car Racer devotee as a teenager in the early and mid-2000s, but I never wanted to mangle my drums to look like Travis Barker's. I guess some people did.

Yeah. I wished I knew what they were thinking. I'm still up in the air about buying it. I don't NEED it, but always wanted to have a Ludwig snare.

If it sounds good and you are buying it to use instead of being a display piece, and you are not looking to flip it to make money, go for it. Folks are not going to notice the extra vent holes when it sits behind your kit.

If it sounds a little dry due to the vent holes, could you just plug them with some rubber grommets from the hardware store or cover with a piece of tape? Again no one is going to notice behind the kit. Could even be a way to customize the sound slightly by the number of holes plugged or covered.

Great advice and idea. I didn't think of the rubber grommet idea. It's worth trying that out. I'm still waiting on the seller to get back to me with a time to meet up and see it.

I'm not looking to flip it or display it. It's just an extra snare to have as a daily snare.
