Is this a 1958 Slingerland Gene Krupa Junior 7N kit? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

So this is what followed me home today. I just can't resist another project, apparently.

When I saw the ad for this kit, I thought certainly this was a 7N kit, since from what I read there were no other ways to get single-headed toms in the late 50s. Should be 12x22, 7x10, 8x12, and 5.5x14.

But when I got there, the kick was 14x24. Everything else was spot-on correct, besides the obviously wrong mufflers and white paint on the toms. So I guess someone decided a Gene Krupa Junior Plus Ensemble should be an option?

About the dirtiest kit I've come across, but the mahogany ply of the kick and snare were just irresistable. Beautiful solid maple rerings. Both drums stamped March 1958. We'll see what's under that ugly white paint soon enough.

I'll need four bow-ties and claws for the kick, and the bottom guts of the snare, so if you have any of those parts available, please PM me.

So is there any market for a kit like this today? The 7N was intended for the budding drummer, thus the single headed toms and 6-lug snare to save a few bucks. From the picture of the 7N in the catalogue, the 10" tom was hoop-mounted on the left, and the 12" was hoop-mounted on the right, so it looked like a 'real kit'. It seems like there can't be many of these kits out there, and when was the last time you saw a Slingy 50s ten inch tom of any type?

So concert toms were invented in 1958?

Well I don't think CT's were invented in 1958; that 7N kit with single headed toms was offered as early as 1950 (at least that's as far back as I checked).

Attached is the 7N catalog entry from the 1955 catalog. Note the 10 and 12 inch single headed toms were simply product numbered as 'special', which is interesting. The 12x22 kick listed is single-tension, which makes sense for a lower-cost Jr kit; but my kick 14x24 is traditional separate tension.

So I have completed all the work I am going to perform on this set, and will soon offer it for sale.

I stripped off the interior paint from the 10 and 12, and the 12 has the same March 1958 date stamp as the snare and bass. No stamp on the 10, but clearly this is a 7N Gene Krupa Jr kit.

I understand this is not your run of the mill 50s Slingerland kit, and the collector value may not be high, since it does not fit the typical kit mold. But I figure some kids may have cut their teeth on a kit like this back in the 50s/60s, and would welcome finding one. Frankly, there may very well be more value in the bass and/or snare alone, but i'm not breaking this kit up, nor am I willing to wait on a duco FT to appear, nor am I drilling these unique toms for reso heads. The next owner can do that if they wish.

This kit is a real survivor - I imagine with the 'cheaper' duco finish and single headed toms that most parents simply sent these to the curb when Jr left the house. Given the marketing to youth that Singerland did for the 7N, I can't fathom that there are a lot of these kits in pristine shape out there.

Sooo....

** What do you think is the value of this set? **

I certainly am willing to wait for the right buyer/timing, but I'm not going to invest any more time or $ bringing this kit any further. I like it the way it is.

Questions? Please ask!

Thanks

John

Once again, my advice is to

please don't get hung up on a name for a drum set configuration. It is very likely that some music store ordered that configuration either for their store or for a drum customer. Slingerland was one drum company that would gladly make up a drum set to the size specs that someone wanted to order. I've owned many Singerland drum sets. Most of them were configurations that were never pictured or named in any catalog.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

In a situation like this I'd be looking for Maple/Poplar/Mahogany 13" and 16" toms, either old orphans to strip down and repaint or 13" and 16" new shells in that makeup. Leave the original toms alone and make two to go with those originals, especially the 24". Nice!
